The Floor Covering Institute prepares individuals to become quality installers of ceramic, resilient, and laminate flooring products. Instructors use the World Floor Covering Association curriculum.

These week-long courses have attracted inexperienced and experienced installers planning to develop a career, improve their skills and learn about the floor covering market. Graduates of these courses may choose to start their own business or be employed by established companies.

Ceramic (30 hours) - Covers the history and manufacturing of ceramic tile, the types and characteristics of tiles, and the industry, state and local building codes. Tools and their uses, measuring, layout and substrates are also reviewed. Selection of correct bonding material, tile cutting options, hands-on installation, grouting, and maintenance complete the curriculum.

Resilient (40 hours) - Covers the history of the trade, types of resilient products, minimum sub-floor standards. Evaluating existing situations is reviewed along with preparing and removing existing flooring. Estimating layout of tile or sheet flooring is included. Cutting, fitting, adhering, seaming, finishing, and repairing are a few of the skills learned in the hands-on experience.

Laminate (30 hours) - Covers the history of laminate, the present residential and commercial market and installer professionalism. Laminate construction, types of laminate flooring and environment, along with the tools and equipment will be reviewed. The hands-on experience will include measuring, estimating and installation. Kitchen and bath installations, along with molding, trim, steps and stairs will be taught.
